Are We Still Shopping Local — or Just Saying We Are?

Let’s be honest: “Shop local” has become the pumpkin spice latte of community slogans — warm, comforting, and everywhere this time of year. We post it, we say it, we nod enthusiastically at markets with tote bags that literally say it. But do we actually do it?

The truth is, supporting local sounds great… until we’re three clicks deep into an Amazon cart at 11:47 p.m. Or when a big-box store’s “holiday sale” tempts us with free shipping and next-day delivery. Convenience is hard to beat — especially when it’s cold outside and we’ve worn out from all the other things we do to keep up.

But here’s the thing: markets, independent shops, small makers and local Canadian brands aren’t just about stuff. They’re about circulation. Every dollar you spend at a local market — on that candle, cake, or handmade ceramic mug — loops right back into your neighborhood – our Canadian economy. It pays for someone’s rent, supports a family-run café, helps an artist buy supplies, pays a staff and keeps our east-end streets feeling vibrant.

Shopping local isn’t about guilt or perfection even. It’s about remembering that the best gifts don’t come in two-day shipping boxes — they come with a story, a face, and maybe even a friendly “Merry Christmas” from across the table.

So this season, before you hit “Add to Cart,” try hitting Queen Street instead. It takes a little extra time and effort — but you’ll walk away with something the internet still hasn’t figured out how to ship: connection.
